Several days ago we had the opportunity to interview Mr. Jordi Pujol. It was a rewarding meeting. Mr. Pujol is an unpretentious and stimulant man. He expressed his support to our Foundation by praising the benefits of our task related to the effort culture. He referred, among other things, about shortages and needs of earlier generations that went ahead thanks to their effort. On this regard, it crossed my mind and simple and moving story:
It was at the beginning of seventies, in a village located in the region of Bages, in the heart of Catalonia, bad connected in communications and opportunities. There lived a building worker, in the word wide sense, one of these man that can do anything, that worked more hours than a clock, that when he finished his work, after dinner, he made any extra job. Everything was enough to go ahead with dignity. He has very clear that the effort was the only tool to overcome the difficulties and itself. In those days the “week-end” does not existed, the whole days during the week were the same, but Sunday. On Sunday they made an exception. In the morning was almost compulsory to go to the church, the parish priest was his customer and he wanted to be pleased. After lunch, he smokes the Sunday special cigar and sometimes he went to the cinema or to the coffee together with his wife. He was really identified with his job and environment. He was hard-working and respectable. In a few words, he was very happy with his wife and his single son.
As I said, the life of this man was characterized by his continuous pushing.
One day he decided to consider the future possibilities of his young son. He was a man that had the idea that progress consisted in the improvement of a generation to another. He itself had improved his parents by achieving a more qualified job. They were, like all other people, country people. He asked itself: What will my son in this country do? Which opportunities to study and became a more qualified person has he?
From that moment he considered the effort to go to live near Barcelona, because it was the only chance to study low cost. And so happened, he leaved his comfortable country and this elderly person, made the effort to begin in another place in order to facilitate his young son’s life. I am aware that first times were hard, however due to that he was a born fighter, he went ahead. Meanwhile his son, conscious about his father responsibility, obtained a degree course.
That was how this man wish, to see his son better qualified than itself, came true.
Espavila Foundation wants to homage to all these people that trough their effort, have facilitated our development Espavila’t in order to go ahead.
